Scene (& heard) this morning:
IAN: I was kind of hoping you'd (task omitted to protect the guilty)
LIS: Well, next time you'd like me to do something, ask -- I'm not telepathic, you know!
IAN: [Quirks his head to the side and gives Lis this dubious look]
LIS: [After a few seconds of this silent scrutiny] SHUT UP!
IAN: [Smirking] See?
I love my husband, but sometimes he can be incredibly frustrating -- especially when he's right.

Note to self
These are the books that I have recently or am about to return to the library unread. I checked them out for my aborted trip to Florida, and haven't had the time (nor brainpower while sick) to read them. And I really feel that if I'm not going to read them for a while, I shouldn't hold onto them. It's only fair to free them for other patrons.
However, the next time I'm looking for something to read, I'll have to remember to go back to the library and pick one of these up. I am interested in them all -- just not right now.
Kitten watching
There's this one back leg that Violet still doesn't have full control over. She can handle three limbs fairly well, but this fourth one tends to escape her. Earlier this morning, she was trying to pick a fight with my foot (which was safely ensconced under sheets and a comforter). She grabbed it with her front paws to hold it in place while she chewed upon it with her teeth and kicked with her back paws. Or, at least, that's what one back paw was doing. Her other foot kept coming up behind her ear -- and as long as it was there, decided she must have intended to scratch herself behind the ear. Then, a moment later, she bopped herself in the nose with that paw.
Boopsie's getting a little rank, so I think we're going to take her to the groomers ASAP. Trying to decide whether we should just pay to get all three cats washed. [Yes, I am aware that two of them officially belong to our tenant. Ian and I are already well aware that we are doomed, and have told him not to bring us any more kittens...] I don't actually believe misery loves company, but when it happens to the kittens, it can be amusing. Besides, they could all kinda use one (a bath, that is).
Tongue Tied
Because Ian and I can't seem to stop singing this song (thanks to folks who helped us find audio), without further ado the lyrics (via Hol Rock): When I saw you for the first time (first time) My knees began to quiver (quiver) And I got a funny feeling (feeling) In my kidneys and my liver (digestive system baby) My hands they started shakin' (shakin') My heart began a-thumpin' (boom, boom, boom) My breakfast left my body (huey, huey, huey) Now darling tell me something
Why do you make me tongue tied (tongue tied) tongue tied Whenever you are near me? (near me) Tied tongue (tied tongue) Tied tongue (tied tongue) Whenever you're in town You make me feel a clown, girl
Yes, you make me tongue tongue (tied tied) tongue tied Why can't I tell you clearly? (clearly) Tied tied, tongue tongue (tongue tied, tongue tied) Whenever you're around
I saw you 'cross the dance floor (dancin') I thought of birds and bees (reproductive system baby) But when I tried to speak to ya (talk, talk) My tongue unravelled to my knees (flippety-flippety-flop) I tried to say "I love you" (love you) But it came out kind of wrong, girl (wrong girl) It sounded like "nunubididoo" (tongue tied) Nuh-mur-nuh-murh-ni-nong-nurl
That's 'cause you make me tongue tied (tongue tied) tongue tied Whenever you are near me (near me) I'm nurmy murmy (nurmy murmy) Murmy nurmy (nurmy murmy) Whenever you're in town (in town) My trousers they go brown, girl
Yes, you make me nongy nangy (nangy nongy) tongue tied Why can't I tell you clearly? (clearly) Be-dobby-durgle (dobby durgle) Tongue tied (tongue tied) Whenever you're around
Oh, I'm beggin' on my knees Sweet, sweet darling, listen please Understand me when I say Gedurble-diggle-doggle-niggle-foggle-nibble-nay
I'm trying to say I'm tongue tied (tongue tied) tongue tied Whenever you are near me (really) I'm nurmy murmy (nurmy murmy) Murmy nurmy (murmy nurmy) Whenever you're in town (in town) I drool so much I drown, girl
Yes, you make me nongy nangy (nangy nongy) ningy nongy Why can't I tell you clearly (clearly) Ge-dobby-durgle (dobby durgle) Durgle dobby (durgle dobby) Whenever you're around (around) Whenever you're around, girl Damn, that's annoyingly catchy.

Whimper and whine
You know, job hunting is impossible to the point of not worth trying when spending any length of time reading from the computer screen makes my eyes itch and hurt. After taking a really hot shower to see if the steam wouldn't clear things up (and laughing until I cried at the antics of the kitten -- an unintended side benefit), I spent the afternoon napping again. I'm really annoyed, because I've now effectively lost two days job-hunting. [I tend to confine my jobhunting to M-F 9-5, because if I didn't have a set schedule, I'd drive myself crazy with guilt for all the hours of the night and weekend I wasn't jobhunting.] At any rate, I'm still feeling all blah and unable to get anything done. I'm so glad Ian is not only putting up with me, but willing to indulge me. :) I don't say it often enough, but I love him and he is worth it.
I wonder
If I give Dave some of Boopsie's cat food, do you think his cats will still come up here to snarf from Boopsie's bowl? I mean, is it the taste they prefer or just the location and thievery?
Still sick
After sucking down tea and soup and decongestants I'm still feeling too muzzyheaded to do much more than veg in front of the tube: tv or computer. I think I've gone through a box and a half of tissues all-told since Friday (Hard to be entirely certain. I've got one box in the car, and another I've been carrying with me in the house.] Ugh.

Thank you
To everybody who has offered me GMail invites, thank you. I managed to get one from the gmail_invites LJ community. And of course, now that my server is up, it's no longer necessary (except as a backup for the next server outage). But thank you all.
In gratitude, here's a photo of Violet, giving an oh so innocent look:
What, am I in your way?’
Nyarg
And to top off everything else, I've now got the song "Tongue Tied" by Danny John Jules and the Red Dwarf cast earworming through my brain. And I can't just listen to the song to exorcise it, because it was only on the Red Dwarf Series II DVD, which I returned to the library this morning. Does anybody know where I might find an MP3 of the tune?
Let sleeping cats lie
Yet photograph them if they're funny enough. Two separate laughs posted on my friends list in short order: Enjoy!
My Day
As you can probably tell, if you're seeing this, osmond-riba.org and ribarambles.org are up and functioning. As you may have noticed, they weren't for most of the day. I assume that's because the server hosting them are in Florida and the outage has something to do with a hurricane named Jeanne.
But why should a lack of connectivity prevent me from blogging? Here are some posts I wrote this morning:
06:46 9/27/04
Well, what I thought was an allergy attack over the last two days appears to have really been the first stirrings of a cold. gug
Among other dreams last night, I was attending a talk by Eleanor Roosevelt on American domestic propaganda during WWII, accompanied by a slide-show of the posters. And I noticed one that I thought would be useful today. Something against war profiteering. I remember taking notes in my notebook, and though my memory was fuzzy upon waking up, it was supposedly from 1939, and involved fixers or fixing. [Don't worry, I googled and it was probably something I just made up.]
I also dreamed I was trying to talk sense into a political reporter. I was telling him that it's not nonpartisan to just divide stories into "he said/she said" because the two sides aren't always equivalent. I asked if he couldn't just say that one side was lying. He said it wouldn't be fair to call one side a liar. I paused, stumped, and asked if he couldn't just say that the other side's arguments were the actual truth? Alas no. He seemed to think that even if the truth was something technically complex, that (for example) only economists could really evaluate, but all the economists agreed that one side was lying through their teeth, they wouldn't tell the public that, but leave it to readers to figure that out for themselves.
10:45 9/27/04
Well, that was a pretty successful morning. Okay, so I can't go more than five minutes without having to blow my nose, and the post-nasal drip has given me a sore throat on top of that, but still, not bad.
Had to (reluctantly) return Red Dwarf Season II which was due back at the library today. Did so after dropping Ian off at the train. And while I was there, checked the racks for any other DVDs I might want to rent. Red Dwarf Season I was on the shelf! The online catalog had said it was out, and I had put a hold on it. [I hope nobody's being wrongly charged overdue fees for it.] So, I snatched that up, along with Quiz Show and McKellan's Richard III (which I still haven't seen). The DVDs of Red Dwarf Seasons 3 & 4 are also in the library network, available only thru a different branch, and they are both checked out. I've got hold requests already submitted for them boath.
Then I headed up to Wild Oats grocery store. Because of/adding to my health woes, we ran out of Sleepytime tea (my favorite) last night and this morning we were down to one teabag of Echinacea. As my luck would have it, both were on sale! And finally, while driving home, I noticed the Hot Now light was on at the Krispy Kreme, so dropped by, thinking I'd get a donut. As I walked in, the woman behind the counter asked if I'd like a free sample. And, since I only wanted one donut, that was perfect.
Somehow I don't think I'm going to get much jobhunting stuff done today, given how sick I'm feeling. Besides, until the webserver is up again, I can't send out any emails anyway. [Darn, the Blogger homepage is no longer offering free gmail invites. I know other places to get them, but, that means a little extra work.] I'm going to try to finish up/send out a thank you letter and assemble some samples of training materials I've written (all of which are print-only, and not online, so that means going to the copy shop). Also, I've been meaning to write a letter to the editor and a query to Ms. Magazine in rebuttal to an article in their last issue. I've got them mostly complete, but for polishing and selecting writing samples.
11:00 9/27/04
Postscript to above: I'm not waiting for Ian; I'm going to watch the Red Dwarf DVDs. I hope he doesn't feel left out; I'm more than willing to rewatch them with him.
First, I'm going to make myself another cup of tea.
Thank goodness we've still got lots of chicken soup left.
11:03 9/27/04
Damn, just opened the jewel case and one of the discs is missing. I've got the bonus features, but not the episodes themselves. Darn. Pout. Just called the library to inform them so I'm not charged... Yes, kitten, you are adorable.
12:13 9/27/04
Okay, that does it. I simply have to obtain the DVDs one way or another. BTW, little kitten Violetta joined me on the bed while I watched the bonus features, and I snapped a couple of photos of her and finished off the roll of film. Maybe I'll wander down to Costco this afternoon and get them developed so I can post them.
12:37 9/27/04
Reading through LJ posts I missed over the weekend with the holiday and all. Navrins writes about something I've been meaning to blog for ages. A local store's billboards say "Freedom of speech is a luxury." Makes me see red every time I notice them.
All the Red Dwarf has me craving a curry, even though I don't like Indian food. I've got a cup of rice cooking in the rice cooker which I'm going to have with chicken soup.
12:41 9/27/04
And yay! I finally caught up... At least, with the non-HarryPotterFandom side of my friends list. And, of course, there are all the new posts that have shown up since I began reading this morning. That feels like more of an accomplishment than it should be.
So that's been my morning. I suppose if I weren't sick, I might think twice before posting some of this unedited and unrevised, but I'll use the fact that I am sick as an excuse. 8) I did have two bowls of chicken soup for lunch, and would've had a third if the ladle hadn't fallen into the hot soup as I was serving myself the second. The soup was too hot for me to fish it out.
After that, I napped until about an hour ago, when I finished reading my old copy of Better than Life and listened to the two audiobook excerpts from the first Red Dwarf book available on the DVD. Chris Barrie does scarily good vocal impressions...
Anyway, I'm posting this and then I'm not sure. I may go down to Costco to get the film developed, I may nap some more, I may have Friday's leftover chicken to eat (Ian was working all day today followed by a meeting with somebody from Sunday school). There's now a purring Violet kitten sitting between the keyboard and the monitor, occasionally pressing the function keys in an effort to get me to pet her.
I hope you're all having a better day than I am -- not that my day is particularly awful, but just because I'm sick and unproductive. Later!
